Module 1: Interval Foundations

Module Overview
We begin with the essential building blocks of music: intervals. These lessons introduce how intervals function on the guitar and why they are central to harmony, melody, and the architecture of musical thought.

Learning Focus
In this module, you will:

  • Identify and play intervals across different fretboard positions.
  • Develop accuracy in both vertical (harmonic) and horizontal (melodic) interval playing.
  • Strengthen fretboard knowledge through carefully sequenced exercises.

Context & Reference
Intervals have been integral to music since the very beginning of Western tradition. In early medieval chant, voices often moved in perfect intervals such as 4ths and 5ths, sonorities that shaped the sound of sacred music for centuries. Over time, composers began exploring 3rds and 6ths, which gradually became the foundation of harmony in the Renaissance and beyond.

By placing intervals within this historical continuum, you can better appreciate why they remain so powerful: every melodic line and every chord is built from them. On the guitar, learning to hear, see, and feel these relationships is the first step toward fluent musicianship.
