In this course you’ll learn about the musical approaches of major Malian ethnic groups like the Mandingue, Fula and Tuareg, how to groove along with classic rhythms from North and Central Mali, the original Desert Blues style of Ali Farka Toure and how to make your guitar solos sing.

“The Hendrix of the Sahara”, Vieux Farka Toure was born in Niafunke, Northern Mali. Vieux began his career as a drummer at Mali’s Institut National des Arts and secretly began learning guitar in 2001. His debut album released in 2007 featured his father, the Grammy award winning African guitar hero Ali Farka Toure and national kora maestro Toumani Diabate.

In 2010 Vieux performed at the opening ceremony of the FIFA World Cup in South Africa and the following year his third studio album featured collaborations with jazz legend John Scofield, Dave Matthews and Derek Trucks. As a passionate champion of the people of Mali and the Sahara region Vieux founded the charity Amahrec Sahel to fund an orphanage and provide musical instruments for young musicians in Mali.

Now signed to World Circuit Records/BMG his 2022 album ‘Les Racines’ (Roots) sees Vieux return to the deep roots of the Desert Blues music that his father introduced the world to.
