borneoftherhythm posted an update
So The piece of music that I chose to play is fairly simple (though when it actually came to recording it, it proved more of a challenge listening back and noticing lots of bits that I wanted to sound better). Its the rhythm guitar part based on Joaõ Gilberto’s version of Chega de Saudade. And in it I tried focusing on some of the things that he shares in the videos, like the samba clave and exploring playing a bit in and out of that,
feeling it out and also finding rhythmic balance between both the thumb and the fingers on the right hand, and the balance between left and right hands with muting the strings or letting them ring out. It seemed quite a simple thing as I am usually much more of a lead player but it actually gave me an interestingly new perspective on playing rhymically. I had never really been so aware of the rhythm of rhythm guitar. I had originally tried to prepare a finger style arrangement of the piece with the melody, but felt it kind of detracted a little from best expressing some of the principles of what he was teaching, as it was quite hard to do, and I hadn’t mastered it enough to properly record it, though I did try to accent the melody here and there throughout the piece. But it was also fun to really just be able to relax a bit more just playing the guitar much more like a percussive instrument, and playing the chords like fills here and there. And for just a few lessons it feels like I have quite a bit more insight into a lot of music I was listening too anyway.

Nice one @borneoftherhythm nice groove, right hand and arm is looking, have you tried playing this with the backing tracks in the Brazilian Guitar Techniques course. They are named mid tempo and up tempo samba groove. Might be fun jamming with those rhythm tracks as it will give you something to bounce off

@edd hey Ed thanks man. Though I cant tell what you meant when you said “right hand and arm is looking” haha, looking good or like too tight? Arm and hand posture is actually something i haven’t mastered or payed attention to too much and something i want to learn to relax more. Will have more of a go with the backing tracks too (: Trying to get that balance of rhythm and a flowing melody all in one, which can prove a challenge, but after listening so much to Baden Powell recently I cant help but be inspired to do

@borneoftherhythm I meant to say right arm is looking relaxed. Check Fernando’s warm up and Niwel’s warm up in the Guitar Technique Library course and see what exercises they use
