        • So lucky to play with bombino, i love him !!!

        • I thought that wrong notes didn’t exist? There are just some notes that draw more attention than others…right? I like playing high attention notes and watching how my guitarist’s facial expression changes…the crowd rarely reacts which is kind of a let down.

If we can’t change the world at least we can play highly dissonant notes in the space time continuum and observe how people (if there are any) react (and if we are alone we can observe how theses notes make us feel). This is why I’ve always held the highest respect for musicians. For me, musicians are magicians that play with our feelings and inspire creative thought.

            • @matthew-smith I think there are deliberate wrong notes which are in fact right notes but in that solo there were couple accidental notes which sound outside of where I wanted them. Did you finish the ear training course yet?

              • @edd Yeah, as I was falling asleep I realized that there are some situations where some notes can be counter productive to what we are trying to do. Ha Ha!

As for the ear training course I was hoping to get back to it this winter. I came to a brick wall with trying to hear the difference between Augmented and diminished chords and then summer hit and I met a Mexicano who wanted a bassist for playing cumbia so we put together a set with a local drummer and played a handful of gigs this summer. It was a lot of fun! We met a Columbian this fall who will hopefully join us to play percussion. So now I am spending time with the Cuban bass evolution course to learn more about the Cuban styles especially Son Montuno because we seem to mix multiple Latin styles and end up improvising quite a bit so I have a lot of work to do.

The ear training course really did make a difference in my ability to play with others though so I might just skip over where I am stuck and come back to it later. I don’t like doing that but luckily in the styles of music I play I don’t have to worry too much about augmented/diminished chords… hee hee hee!

                • @matthew-smith Wow. Sounds like a lot of fun. The easy way to hear the difference is like this. What they both have in common is that they sound unusual which basically comes from the discordance you hear because the 5th is not a perfect 5th like major or minor chords which we are so used to hearing. So there is an unusual 5th that our ears here and whether it’s the flat 5th for diminished or sharp 5th for augmented they both sound unusual. The part you have to listen for is the 3rd. Is it major or minor which you already know how to hear. If the 5th is unusual and the chord sounds minor then it’s diminished and if it sounds major then it’s augmented. That’s the bit I listen for

            • Ok, I’ll give it another go with that in mind. Sometimes after a long break things sound much clearer than they first seemed. Thanks!

              • @matthew-smith Yes and also, just because you took a break from that course it doesn’t mean that your ears haven’t been improving naturally anyway with all of the other music you’ve been involved with

              • Yes, that is what I am hoping. That reminds me of something that happened when I was a little boy. I had a marionette that had all of its strings tangled up and I couldn’t get them straightened out so I put it down for the night and went to bed. The next morning when I picked it up everything was untangled! I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was as if night gnomes had come out and worked at it all night. It was a miracle! So maybe when I delve back into the ear training course I will realize that I have perfect pitch???…and no I have never tried psychedelics…maybe it’s time?
