Can the speed of the backing tracks be slowed substantially by the user, so that less accomplished players can ease their way in to working with them?

  Yes. In the control bar below the backing track the default speed setting is 100%. Change that to be slower or faster without changing the pitch, however I find when you go below 70% of the original speed with any audio recordings naturally it’s going to sound a bit weird. You can use that speed setting on any of our lessons also.
